How long should a pre-screening round for a composites specialist take?

How much should industry background matter?

Evaluating answers
What is the strongest signal when screening a composites specialist?
A defect they investigated. Anyone who has been near production has dealt with porosity, delamination or a bad cure, and can describe the inspection method and what the cross-section showed. Candidates who have only specified describe material properties instead.
How do I judge testing knowledge without a materials background?
