Why pre-screen GIS specialists before the technical interview
GIS work splits into two jobs that share a title. One is cartographic production: importing supplied data, styling it and exporting maps to a template. The other is spatial analysis and automation: choosing a method, scripting it, and standing behind the result when a planning decision rests on it. Both list the same software on a resume. A short screen tells you which one is in front of you, and whether their scripting claim survives a follow-up question.

Process basics
How long should a pre-screening round for a GIS specialist take?
Fifteen minutes across eight to ten questions, answered async. Enough to place them on the production to analysis spectrum, confirm scripting depth and hear one real project before a technical interview goes into tooling.
Should I ask for a portfolio of maps?
Ask for one project and the decisions inside it. A folder of attractive maps shows cartographic skill, which is worth having, but it says nothing about whether the analysis underneath was appropriate or whether the input data was fit for it.
Evaluating answers
What is the strongest signal when screening a GIS specialist?
A projection or coordinate system problem they diagnosed. Anyone who has handled real data from multiple sources has had layers land in the wrong place, and can describe how they spotted it. Candidates who have never hit one have worked only with data prepared for them.
How do I check scripting claims without a technical background?
Ask what they automated and how often it now runs. A specialist who scripts can name a repetitive task, the tool they used, and roughly how much time it saved. Answers that stay at knowing Python usually mean a training course rather than working code.
