Most smart home failures are network failures. Thirty devices on a domestic router, a hub in a cupboard, and a system that works until the internet drops or someone changes the password. The second failure is human: an installation only the integrator understands, in a house where somebody else has to turn the lights on. Integrators who avoid both design for the household rather than the demonstration. A short screen surfaces which kind you have.
What actually matters when screening Smart Home Technology Integrator candidates

Check hands-on depth with Control4, Crestron or Lutron programming, KNX or Rako lighting loads, Cat6A structured cabling, rack builds, and UniFi VLAN setup for AV subnets.

Probe low-voltage licensing, working safely near 240V or mains dimmer modules, ladder and loft work, isolating circuits before pulling cable, and RCD or breaker coordination with the electrician.

Test diagnosis of intermittent faults: dropped Zigbee or Z-Wave mesh nodes, HDMI handshake and EDID failures, PoE budget overload, IR versus RS-232 control loss, DHCP conflicts.

Assess conduct in occupied homes: dust protection, punch lists, handover training for owners, documentation of IP schedules and as-built drawings, response on post-install service calls.

Process basics
How long should a pre-screening round for this role take?
Ten to fifteen minutes across eight to ten questions, answered async. Enough to establish what they installed, test their network and compatibility thinking, and hear how they handle handover and support.
How much networking knowledge does this role need?
More than most candidates have. The majority of callbacks are network problems rather than device faults, so an integrator who cannot design a network for thirty devices will generate support calls indefinitely.
Evaluating answers
What is the strongest signal when screening an integrator?
What broke after six months. Integrators who stay close to their work know: a firmware update, a changed password, a device that dropped off. Anyone whose installations have never had a callback has not done many.
How do I judge their security answers?
Ask what happens if a device is compromised. Sound answers cover network segmentation and what a camera or lock can reach. Anyone who answers only about strong passwords has not thought about the house as a system.
