Why pre-screen astrobiologists before the interview
The history of this field is a series of announcements that turned out to have a chemical explanation, and each one cost the field credibility. The researchers who last apply the abiotic explanation first and require it to be excluded before anything else is said out loud. A short screen asks what else could produce the signal, which separates disciplined research from enthusiasm quickly.
What actually matters when screening Astrobiologist candidates

Probe command of biosignature theory: abiotic versus biotic organic distinctions, isotopic fractionation, chirality, habitability modelling, and COSPAR planetary protection categories relevant to Mars or icy moon targets.

Judge outreach and cross-discipline reach: briefing mission engineers, planetary geologists, press on life detection claims, and resisting overstatement in public communication of ambiguous results.

How do I judge their practical experience?
Ask about contamination control in their own work. Real answers cover blanks, controls and planetary protection. Anyone who has not worried about terrestrial contamination has not run the analysis.
