    Listen for

    References spacing, deflagration venting, gas detection, UL 9540A test data and an actual conversation with an authority having jurisdiction.

    Answers with generic PPE and lockout advice while missing thermal runaway propagation and code requirements entirely.

What certifications or credentials should an energy storage specialist have?

Look for a PE licence or engineering degree for design-side roles, plus NABCEP PV Installation Professional or Energy Storage credentials on the field side. Familiarity with UL 9540 and UL 9540A test reports, NFPA 855, IEEE 1547 and local interconnection rules matters more than any single certificate. Utility-side candidates often add ERCOT, CAISO or PJM market training.

How long should a pre-screen for an energy storage specialist take?

Ten to fifteen minutes of recorded answers across eight to ten questions is enough. Two questions on chemistry and inverter interface, two on a commissioned project with real capacity and cycling numbers, one diagnostic scenario, one on fire authority and grid operator coordination, and one on location, travel and site access. Longer screens lose strong candidates who are employed.

Evaluating answers

How do you tell a real BESS practitioner from someone who has only read about storage?

Practitioners give you numbers and constraints without prompting: MWh nameplate, C-rate, round-trip efficiency at a stated temperature, cycles per day, degradation curve and the augmentation year in the contract. They name the inverter and BMS vendors they fought with. Readers stay at the level of "lithium iron phosphate is safer" and cannot describe a commissioning capacity test.

What should a good answer to the underperformance troubleshooting question include?

A strong answer separates the possible causes before touching anything: cell balancing and SOH data from the BMS, inverter clipping or derating logs, thermal management, then dispatch strategy and market signals. They cite the capacity test method used to confirm, and what the warranty or availability guarantee obligated the OEM to do. Blaming the cells first is weak.
