    Generic references to wearing gloves, with no mention of storage conditions, negative controls or contamination monitoring.

    Listen for

    Named platforms (GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, capillary electrophoresis, comparison microscope, ALS) plus calibration logs, maintenance records and the retest or re-run decision after a failure.

    They list instruments they only observed, or treat calibration and quality control as someone else's job.

    One or two clear disciplines, an honest case volume, competency sign-off status, and a candid line on where their expertise ends.

  2. 05Tell me about a particularly challenging case you worked on, ideally one with a degraded or ambiguous sample, and how you resolved it.

    Listen for

    A specific sample problem, the methods tried, the limits they hit, consultation with a second reader, and a conclusion that may well have been inconclusive.

    Every case ends in a confident identification, or the difficulty described is scheduling rather than the evidence itself.

  3. 06What would you do if you suspected a colleague of mishandling or tampering with evidence?

    Listen for

    Immediate written escalation to a quality manager or laboratory director, preservation of records, and awareness of discovery obligations to the prosecution and defence.

    They would raise it quietly with the colleague first, wait for more proof, or protect the lab's reputation over disclosure.

    Listen for

    A concrete example: an exclusion, a contamination finding, or a corrected report, delivered in writing with the underlying data and without softening the conclusion.

    They cannot recall a single instance, or they describe adjusting wording to keep detectives or prosecutors comfortable.

  2. 08Have you testified in court as a forensic scientist? How many times, and what did the toughest cross-examination focus on?

    Listen for

    A count, the courts involved, and a specific line of cross (method validation, error rate, contamination risk) plus how they conceded limits without collapsing.

    Vague testimony claims with no recall of questioning, or defensiveness about a challenge to their method or report.

    Listen for

    Plain language, no unexplained jargon, a clear statement of what the evidence supports, and an explicit boundary around what cannot be concluded.

    Contemporaneous bench notes, LIMS entries, technical and administrative review steps, and notes written so another analyst could reproduce the work years later.

Confirm three things: which discipline they actually practise (DNA, toxicology, firearms, latent prints, trace, digital), how many cases they have signed out independently rather than under a trainer, and whether their previous lab held ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation. Also ask about proficiency test history and any competency sign-off, since that determines how quickly they can carry casework for you.

Do forensic scientist candidates need court testimony experience to pass a screen?

No, but you need to know where they sit. Entry-level analysts often have none, so probe moot court exercises, mock cross-examination in training, and whether they have written reports that went to a prosecutor. For senior roles, ask for the number of times they were qualified as an expert and whether any testimony drew a Daubert or Frye challenge.

How do I tell real casework from lab coursework in a forensic scientist's answers?

Real casework carries friction. Listen for sample condition (degraded, mixed, limited quantity), the decision to consume or preserve material, a supervisor or second reader disagreeing, a repeat extraction, or a result reported as inconclusive. Coursework answers describe clean samples, known outcomes and equipment names. Ask who signed the report; if they cannot say, it was not their case.
