Why pre-screen mechanical engineers before the technical interview
Mechanical engineering resumes describe projects rather than roles, and on a large programme that hides almost everything that matters. Two candidates can list the same product: one owned a subsystem through tolerancing, supplier qualification and a failed validation test; the other produced models to a specification handed down. Both wrote the same bullet point. A short screen gets to what they personally decided and whether it survived contact with a manufacturing process.
What actually matters when screening Mechanical Engineer candidates

Check depth in stress analysis, material selection and tolerance stacks: ask which CAD suite (SolidWorks, Creo, NX), FEA solver, and GD&T standard (ASME Y14.5) they apply daily.

Probe for hardware that reached production: part numbers, build volumes, tooling released, DFM reviews with suppliers, and how prototypes moved from first article to sign-off.

Diagnosis under uncertainty
Test how they chase field failures: cracked welds, bearing wear, vibration or overheating, and whether they used test rigs, strain gauges, DOE or teardown to isolate root cause.

Assess collaboration with manufacturing, quality and electrical teams: ECO handling, PPAP or drawing packs sent to machine shops, and negotiating tolerance versus cost with suppliers.

Process basics
How long should a pre-screening round for a mechanical engineer take?
Fifteen minutes across eight to ten questions, answered async. Enough to establish which discipline they sit in, confirm analysis depth beyond running the software, and hear one design that was actually manufactured.
Should the screen include a technical problem?
Not yet. Ask them to describe a design decision and what it cost. A calculation exercise is better placed in the technical interview, and it tells you little that a description of a real failure investigation would not.
Evaluating answers
What is the strongest signal when screening a mechanical engineer?
A part that failed and what they found. Engineers whose work reached production have had something come back from test or from the field, and can describe how they narrowed the cause. Candidates who have only modelled describe designs that always worked.
How do I judge simulation claims without an engineering background?
Ask what they compared the result against. A credible answer includes a hand calculation, a physical test, or a mesh sensitivity check. Anyone who reports simulation output as fact, with no validation, is describing software operation rather than analysis.
