Why pre-screen manufacturing process engineers before the interview
A yield drop rarely announces its cause. Material varies, an operator has adapted the method for good reasons, a tool has drifted, and the line has to keep running while somebody works it out. Engineers worth hiring go to the line, watch the process and change one thing at a time. A short screen asks about a problem they solved that way, with the numbers.
What actually matters when screening Manufacturing Process Engineer candidates

Check command of cycle time studies, SPC control charts, Cp/Cpk capability analysis, PFMEA, and control plans; ask which process (injection moulding, CNC, assembly, plating) they own end to end.

Work that shipped
Probe line changes they personally implemented: fixture redesigns, takt rebalancing, scrap reduction, new equipment qualification with IQ/OQ/PQ, and the yield or OEE numbers that moved.

Diagnosis under uncertainty
Test root cause work on intermittent defects: how they used 5 Why, Ishikawa, or DOE when the data was noisy and production pressure demanded a fast containment decision.

Assess how they work with operators, maintenance, quality, and suppliers: standard work rollouts, training on new SOPs, PPAP submissions, and handling resistance on the shop floor.

How long should a pre-screening round for this role take?

How much does industry experience matter?
The diagnostic approach transfers; the process knowledge does not. Someone strong in one industry can learn another, but expect a ramp before they are useful on your specific processes.

How do I judge their approach to operators?
