Ask the yes-or-no questions before anyone presses record

Do not watch a two-minute video to learn someone cannot work weekends when a dropdown would have told you. Standard response questions collect typed answers before the first media question.

Pick a response type per question in the Standard Responses section. One answering time applies to the whole section.

Nine response types

Each standard question gets its own response type, so the answer comes back as a number, a date, or a choice you can filter on, not a sentence you have to read.

Text (single line)

Where did you hear about this role?

Number

Years of experience, or expected monthly salary.

URL

A portfolio, GitHub, or LinkedIn profile link.

Email

A validated address, so the invite does not bounce.

Checkbox

Tick every language you can take a support call in.

Multiple Choice

Pick one: morning, evening, or overnight shift.

Dropdown

One option from a long list, such as state or licence class.

Date

Earliest start date, or the day a visa expires.

Internet Speed Test

Candidates run a speed check. Handy for remote call-centre roles.

What changes when the typed answers come first

Disqualify Before The Video

Mark a standard question as a must-have, such as a forklift licence or a start date before 1 November. Applicants who miss it are stopped before the first media question and never reach your review queue.

Answers You Can Sort And Export

A dropdown answer is a value, not a paragraph. Export every answer in the job to CSV, or push each field to your ATS through webhooks and Zapier without anyone retyping a salary figure.

One Timer For The Whole Section

Candidates answer all standard questions together as one group. Set a section-wide answering time or leave it open, and they move on to the video questions once the group is submitted.

How it works

Open the Questions step of your job and click Add questions under Standard Responses, or pull one in from your library, an import, or AI

Type the question, pick a response type, and tick Required. For checkbox, multiple choice, and dropdown questions, add the options candidates choose from

Turn on scoring for standard responses to mark must-haves and auto-disqualify, then set one answering time for the section and save

Frequently asked questions about standard response questions

Common questions about typed answers in a Hirevire prescreen and what candidates and reviewers see.

What is a standard response question?
A question the candidate answers by typing or selecting rather than recording. Hirevire offers nine types: single-line text, number, URL, email, checkbox, multiple choice, dropdown, date, and an internet speed test.
When do candidates answer them?
All standard response questions are grouped together and answered before the first video, audio, screen recording, or file upload question. Candidates cannot skip ahead to the media questions.
Can I set a time limit?
Yes, one answering time for the whole Standard Responses section, set in minutes or left at no limit. There is no per-question timer on standard questions. If the limit runs out, the response locks and cannot be edited.
Can standard responses disqualify a candidate automatically?
Yes. Enable scoring for standard responses, mark at least one question as a must-have with its condition, and turn on auto-disqualify. Candidates who fail a must-have are stopped before the media questions.
How do multiple choice, dropdown, and checkbox differ?
Multiple choice shows every option and the candidate picks one. Dropdown hides the options in a menu and the candidate picks one, which suits long lists. Checkbox lets the candidate tick several options.
Can I add help text, audio, or video to a standard question?
No. Additional information is available on media questions only. Put any context a candidate needs into the question text itself.
Can I reuse questions across jobs?
Yes. Tick Add to library on any question to save it, then choose Add from library on another job. You can also import a pasted list of questions or generate them with AI from the job title.
Where do the answers end up?
On the application page next to the media responses, in the CSV export for the job, and in the webhook and Zapier payloads, so they can land in your ATS or spreadsheet without retyping.
