What qualifications should I check before booking an EV technician for a bay test?
Ask for the specific credential and its level: ASE L3 Light Duty Hybrid/Electric Vehicle Specialist in the US, IMI TechSafe Level 3 or Level 4 in the UK, plus any manufacturer high-voltage training from Tesla, Hyundai, Ford or BYD programmes. Confirm the expiry date and whether it authorised them to de-energise packs unsupervised or only to work alongside a qualified technician.
How long should a pre-screen for an EV technician be?
Eight to twelve minutes of recorded answers is enough. Four or five questions cover platforms worked on, the isolation sequence, one intermittent fault story, and shift or on-call availability. Keep the deep diagnostic scenario for the bay assessment, where you can watch them use an insulation resistance tester and read live data rather than describe it.
Evaluating answers
How do I tell a real EV technician from an ICE technician who has read about them?
Listen for named tools and part-level detail: insulation resistance testing at 500V, orange cable routing, contactor welding, pack module balancing, DoIP or CAN gateway access. Retrainers describe EVs in general terms (fewer moving parts, regenerative braking) and drift back to engine work when pressed for a specific job they completed alone.
What safety answers should disqualify an EV technician candidate?
Any answer that skips proving dead. Strong candidates name the service disconnect or manual service disconnect, the capacitor discharge wait time, class 0 insulated gloves inspected before use, and testing the meter on a known live source before and after. Candidates who mention working live for speed, or who cannot name their PPE class, should not reach the bay.
