Why pre-screen telecommunications engineers before the technical interview
This title covers at least four jobs: physical installation, transmission and transport design, RF and radio planning, and network operations. What actually matters when screening Telecommunications Engineer candidates

Probe depth in RF link budgets, microwave path design, DWDM or GPON transport, and 4G/5G core elements; ask which vendor platforms (Ericsson, Nokia, Huawei, Cisco) they configured.

Ask for networks they took from design to service: site counts, backhaul capacity delivered, cutover windows, acceptance testing with OTDR or spectrum analyser results.

Test troubleshooting of intermittent faults: dropped calls, high BER, PIM on antenna lines, fibre attenuation; ask how they isolated cause from KPI counters and drive test data.

Check dealings with spectrum regulators, tower landlords, civil crews and NOC teams; ask about licence filings, site permits, and coordinating outages with operations.

How long should a pre-screening round for a telecommunications engineer take?

How much should certifications count?
They confirm vendor training and often matter for tenders and accreditation. They say nothing about operational experience. Ask what they have configured in production and what they have been called out for, and read the certification alongside that rather than instead of it.

What is the strongest signal when screening a telecommunications engineer?
An outage they restored. Engineers with operational experience describe what they checked first, what they ruled out, and how they decided between restoring service and finding the cause. Lab experience produces stories where everything was reproducible.
How do I compare a field background with a design background?
Weight the questions rather than scoring both on everything. For the field engineer, push on design, documentation and standards. For the design engineer, push on installation constraints and what happens when the plan meets the physical site.
