Common scenarios

Camera or microphone permissions denied

If you see a message that your camera or microphone permissions are blocked or denied, your browser is preventing Hirevire from accessing your devices.

Quick fix: Look for the settings icon in your browser's address bar (usually a lock or camera icon). Click it and change the camera and microphone settings from "Block" to "Allow." Then refresh the page.

For detailed, device-specific steps, see How to enable camera and microphone access.

No camera on your computer? You can complete the interview on your mobile phone instead. Open the interview link in Chrome or Safari on your phone.

Video and audio test fails

Before recording your responses, Hirevire runs a brief test to verify your camera and microphone are working. If the test shows an error or won't start:

  1. Refresh the page and try again

  2. Close any other apps using your camera or microphone (like Zoom, Teams, or FaceTime)

  3. Try a different browser or device

If you still see permission errors, enable camera and microphone access in your browser settings.

Forgot to record or want to try again

After recording a video or audio response, look for a Retake button at the bottom of the screen. It shows how many attempts you have left—for example, "Retake (2)" means you can record two more times.

If you don't see the Retake button or it shows "Retakes are disabled for this question," the employer has turned off retakes for that question. This happens when:

  • The question has a thinking time countdown

  • You've used all your allowed attempts

  • You've already submitted your full application

See I forgot to start the recording, can I try again? for details.

Ran out of time

Some questions have a thinking time countdown. When the timer reaches zero, recording starts automatically and you cannot restart. You'll see "Retakes are disabled for this question" if you try to record again.

If you ran out of time before completing a question, finish the rest of your application and submit it. Then contact the recruiter directly using the email from the job posting or invitation to explain what happened.

Learn more about how thinking time and retakes work.

Already submitted your application

Once you click Submit, you cannot re-record or edit any responses—even if the job allows retakes. Your application is final.

If you need to submit a corrected or new video response, contact the recruiter directly. They can reset your application link if needed.

See I missed my recording or want to record again for a template you can use to contact the recruiter.

Tips to avoid recording issues

  • Complete the video and audio test before starting your responses—it only takes about 10 seconds

  • Watch for the red recording indicator on screen so you know when you're recording

  • Check each response before moving to the next question if retakes are available

  • Don't close the browser tab until you see the "Application submitted" confirmation

Need more help?

If you've tried the steps above and your recording still isn't working, contact the recruiter directly using the email address from the job posting or invitation. They can reset your application link or suggest an alternative way to submit your response.
