How to add references to an application
Updated today
Some applications include a References question that asks for the names and contact details of people who can vouch for your work. You fill it in on the employer's public application link, the same way you answer any other question: no account or login is needed.
What the References step asks for
The employer decides how many references you provide and which fields you fill in. First name and Last name are always required. The employer can also ask for Email, Phone, Company, or Relationship, and can hide any of these fields entirely.
The form starts with one reference card and shows how many references are needed, for example "0 of 1 required", "1 added", or "Up to 3".
Add your references
Fill in the first reference card. Enter First name and Last name, then complete every other field the card shows, such as Email, Phone, Company, or Relationship.
Choose the relationship. Pick one of Supervisor, Co-worker, Mentor, Client, or Other. If you choose Other, an additional field appears asking for the relationship details. When the employer made Relationship required, that detail field is required too.
Add another reference if you need more. Click Add reference and fill in the new card. You can add references up to the employer's maximum.
Check each card before you move on. Use Edit reference to change details or Remove reference to delete a card you no longer want.
Continue with your application. Once every required reference is filled in and valid, move on to the next question and submit your application as usual.
Gather your references before you start. For each person you will need at least a first name and last name, plus any other details the employer asks for on the card.
Fix validation errors
Email and phone values are checked for correct formatting. An invalid email address or phone number blocks that reference from being submitted, so correct the value on the card before you continue. First name and Last name are always required on every card.
On a required References question, you must submit at least the employer's minimum number of valid references, and you cannot add more than the maximum. A reference you started filling in counts as incomplete until every required field on its card is valid.
When the question is optional
If the employer marked the References question as optional, you can submit your application with zero references. Any reference you started filling in must still be valid and complete before you submit: either finish the card or remove it.
After you submit, the employer sees your references in the application details.
